Her brush with death, plus her failure to apprehend K, had left her feeling eager to get away from San Diego. She keyed Soon into a text message and pressed Send. It wasn’t a commitment to see him. Just the courtesy of a response.
Halfway through her beer, she listened to the voicemail from her mother: “Your father died this morning. The funeral is Saturday. I hope you’ll come.”
Dallas visualized the old man in a casket, and an unexpected grief overwhelmed her. A moment later, she was sobbing. She didn’t try to hold back or talk herself out of it. She let the tears flow.
But the outburst was brief, and another longing took over. She keyed in a second text to Cameron: I’ll be on a plane Friday. Let’s hook up for the weekend and see how it goes.
